4 day trip to the Rocky Mountains with white water rafting!

Trip at a glance:

Join us on a fun-filled 4-day trip as we scale two 14ers- Mt. Grays and Mt. Torreys. We will end the trip by spending a day white water rafting in the Colorado river where you can kick back and relax after the great workout.

Take a break from the usual grind and enjoy the weekend camping, hiking and socializing with other outdoor enthusiasts.

Hikers have to be in good physical condition.

ITINERARY

Overview:

Day 1 – Friday May 23rd
05:30 AM Hikers leave from Des Moines, IA for the Rocky Mountains National Park, CO. Stop for lunch on the road
1:30 PM Denver International Airport Pickup
4:30 PM Arrive at campsite in the Rocky Mountains National Park
Day 2 – Saturday May 24th
03:30 AM Wake-up, enjoy a healthy breakfast.
04:15 AM Drive to the Grays Peak trailhead
05:00 AM Start hiking the Grays trail  to the summit of Grays Peak (~3.5 miles)
10:00 AM* Arrive at Grays Peak (14,270 ft.). Have lunch. Enjoy the view. Take pictures
10:30 AM* Start hiking the Grays-Torreys saddle to Torreys Peak (~ 1 mile)
Noon Arrive at Torreys Peak (14,267 ft). Enjoy the view. Take pictures
12:30 PM* Hikers begin their descent back to the trailhead (~3.75 miles)
4:30 PM* Arrive at campsite. Enjoy a hearty dinner, relax and socialize
Day 3 – Sunday May 25th
7:00 AM Breakfast
9:00 AM Depart for White Water Rafting
2:00 PM Back from White Water Rafting
Afternoon Relax at the Campsite
Day 4 – Monday May 26th
5:00 AM Breakfast for Des Moines Group
5:30 AM Hikers leave for Des Moines
8:30 AM Breakfast for Denver Group
9:30 AM Hikers leave for Denver International Airport
Noon Denver International Airport drop off
06:00 PM Des Moines drop off

 *This is an estimate of the time it will take to hike to each point and will depend on hikers speed and overall fitness.

Saturday – Hike Mt. Grays & Mt. Torreys

Highest Elevation: 14,270 ft.

Distance: ~8.25 miles round-trip

Route: Grays trail

Difficulty: Moderate to difficult

 

3-night camping

We will be camping at the campgrounds located in the Rocky Mountains National Park.

Tents will be provided however each hiker will be required to bring their own sleeping bag and sleeping pad/foam.

Cost: $325** (from Des Moines, IA) / $265 (meet us at the campsite/Denver International Airport)

  • Transportation: From Des Moines, IA to the Rocky Mountains National Park and back**
  • Meals: This includes all the meals from when we get to the national park to when we leave the national park

 Qualifications:

The hikes are rated moderate to difficult with the highest elevation point approximately 14,265ft. Hikers are required to be in good physical condition. If you have any condition that we need to know about, please email us at hikes@peak4poverty.org.

Weather:

The weather is expected to be in the mid-70s during the day and can drop to the low 40s during the night. Weather on the mountain is much cooler than at the campsite.

Altitude:

Due to the high altitude, hikers may experience various symptoms as their bodies adjust to the high altitude. The most common symptom is headaches. To help your body acclimate to the high altitude, we recommend taking Diamox (Acetazolamide). This is a prescribed medication. Talk to your health care provider to ensure that the drug is safe for you.
